Cold Working Glass Artist

My earlier fascination with visual and emotional effects of light and color through photography and painting has further evolved in my coldworking glass pieces. After taking a class with Kent Lauer, a glass artist from California, I fell in love with coldworking glass processes. The joy of coldworking comes from the hand processes and the transformation of the piece as I balance technical skills with artistry. While working a piece I keep thinking about what it could turn into. I prefer to let the glass itself dictate the final piece, exploring the infinite range of paradoxes: glass is fragile and solid, transparent and opaque, refractive and reflective. Colors within each piece span the entire spectrum created by hand shaping laminated layers of optic crystal, profusion, and dichroic coated glass. Some of the glass I use is no longer available truly making several pendants one of a kind. Old Lighthouse Lenses are the main component glass used in my Sailing sculpture series and some of my Lights sculpture series.
Cold working is technically defined as changing the shape or surface texture of glass. This is done through a series of tools and hand techniques. Improvisation, Intuition, and Spontaneity are the most powerful tools in my studio. Saws, lathes, grinders, and hands round out the other studio tools. Creating with these tools results in a set of refractive indexes that cast and reflect colors at the same time, continually changing the viewer’s experience. Drawing on my memories of colors in the sky and reflections on the water while sailing in the Straights of San Juan de Fuca, I hope each glass piece in my sailing series allows the viewer to experience the full color spectrum and range of emotions from yellow serenity to orange high energy, from blue remoteness and cold to red enveloping and warmth, from purple restless to green soothing.
In my “Lights” series I am pushing out boundaries to further explore color, form and light and how they interact with each other to create infinite changes of reflections. The series is designed to showcase light and all its intrinsic properties, holding the viewer's attention in an ever evolving piece contrasting reality with perception. Building from the inside out mirrors inner creativity revealing itself to others outside my experience. In reality, my medium is really Light itself!
My newest series, "Balance without Symmetry", further stretches light and delicate tipping points of color just as life is composed of changing balances that we adjust every day.
I strongly believe in the importance of art in everyone’s life: hand-made pieces that will have a longer life cycle than things we are surrounded with that become obsolete and are designed to be replaced. Pendants and sculpture will have an extended aesthetic life to entertain and evoke emotions.
Success to me occurs when the glass piece captivates the viewer’s imagination and encourages him to rediscover something new each time he looks into it. Glass is an amazing material to work with and my goal is to give the viewer an amazing experience.
